Impaling is an Enchantment in Minecraft exclusive for the Trident, similar to Channeling, Riptide, and Loyalty. Tridents are a rare drop from Drowned, which can be used for melee and ranged combat. Typically, a Trident will deal a fixed amount of damage to a target. However, when imbued with the Impaling Enchantment in Minecraft, the Trident can deal ×1.25 more damage, all the way up to ×6.25 at rank V. This increase in damage taken applies specifically to aquatic mobs, such as Guardians or Glow Squids. Continue reading to learn more about the Impaling Enchantment and how to get it in Minecraft.
How Does Impaling Work In Minecraft
For clarification, the Impaling Enchantment bolsters the damage dealt to aquatic mobs: Axolotls, Cod, Dolphins, Elder Guardians, Guardians, Squids, Glow Squids, Pufferfish, Salmon, Tropical Fish, and Turtles. However, this damage increase does not apply to Drowned since they are categorized as an undead mob.

Furthermore, there is a significant difference in how Impaling works in Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock editions. In Java, all aquatic mobs receive extra damage from melee or ranged attacks with the Trident. The player does not have to be underwater, but the target creature does need to be an aquatic mob. For instance, throwing an Impaling V Trident at a Guardian will produce the same result above and below the water’s surface. However, for Bedrock, players are able to apply the Trident Enchantment’s damage multiplier to any mob that has come into contact with water. In other words, if a land creature like a Spider or Sheep were to be struck with an Impaling Trident while in still or flowing water, they would lose the same number of hearts as if they were an aquatic mob in Java Minecraft. The Enchantment can also become activated during rain in Bedrock, allowing the player to deal more damage to any target in contact with the rainfall.
To get the Impaling Enchantment in Minecraft, players have several options. First, it is possible to get the Enchantment from an Enchanting Table. Alternatively, players can imbue their Trident using an Impaling book. This book can be obtained from multiple sources:
- Fishing – The Enchantment can be a random catch while fishing in any body of water.
- Loot Chest – The Enchantment can be a random item of loot that spawns within a chest found in ruins, mines, and other biomes.
- Librarian – The Enchantment can be a potential item sold by the Librarian, a Village Profession whose Job Site Block is a Lectern.
