Perhaps one of the best is the Recovery Compass, an item you can use to point to your last death spot. The compass can save you if you’re worried about losing your weapons and tools after dying. However, to make this compass, you need Echo Shards! This guide will explain where to find Echo Shards in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Editions.
Where To Find Echo Shards in Minecraft Java and Bedrock
The secret to finding Echo Shards in Minecraft is in the Deep Dark. After all, the shards match the biome’s environment and blocks, almost as if you could pull it directly out of the ground there. Interestingly, while finding an Echo Shard isn’t easy, it is a little more fun.
Your next step is to find an Ancient City! Travel down to around Y = -51 or lower and look for blocks like Deepslate, Soul Lanterns, Basalt and candles. You’ll know that you’ve stepped into the right area when you find these.

Within an Ancient City, you’ll find dark towers, walls and ruined structures containing chests. Within these chests, there’s a chance you’ll find an Echo Shard. If you’re lucky, you might find up to three! While you’ll have to search multiple chests for the shards, you may find them all within one Ancient City if you’re lucky.
If you get your hands on eight Echo Shards, you can use them to make a Recovery Compass. Make sure you also have a regular compass since you’ll have to place it in the center of your crafting table grid alongside the shards!
