The sixth portal has opened, and you must enter to save your town. Moonlighter: Between Dimensions is the newest expansion that adds new weapons, enemies, and more.
After the conclusion of Moonlighter, it is revealed that the dungeons you were adventuring to were portals to other dimensions. This expansion begins with a new Interdimensional Dungeon opening, and you are tasked to go through and close it.
This expansion is the first paid piece of downloadable content for Moonlighter.
The dungeon contains a mix of enemies, old and new. Some enemies will be ones you remember from the other dungeons, but others like a hazmat gas sprayer or blue flame enemy require new ways to take on encounters.
While the original dungeons follow a set pattern of three floors followed by a boss fight, the Interdimensional Dungeon contains nine floors and a final boss fight. This does seem like a lot, but the game does provide some assists to help you in case you feel overwhelmed.
The expansion contains 10 original enemies and five mini-bosses to take on. Each of these enemies contains new materials, which you use to craft and upgrade new items.
Challenging Enemies
Given that this is endgame content, do not expect a pushover from the enemies. Even on the normal difficulty, each of the encounters is quite difficult.
To take on these new enemies, you have access to a new set of weapons and armor to upgrade. Other new weapons include the Trick weapons, that consume health in order to use them.
Other additions to the game include new rings to boost your stats, new customers to come shop at your store, and special familiars to join you in combat.
You can even upgrade your shop to its full limit. Not only does the upgrade add more space to sell items, but it adds a cute little robot vacuum cleaner that moves around your shop.
New Weapons, Armor, and NPCs
Another new addition is a new NPC for your town, the Trader. After paying a fee, the Trader will have a selection of materials that you can trade with them to upgrade your items.
While in the Interdimensional Dungeon, you can also find the Slime Alchemist. The Slime Alchemist will get you access to special potions, weapon blueprints, and shortcuts for a price.
In regards to performance, the Nintendo Switch version of the game has improved a lot. Before the game would have performance dips and crash constantly, but currently the game runs spectacularly.
If you have not beaten the main game, there are still a lot of additions you can check out in the expansion. There is a chance for the Interdimensional Dungeon to appear as a Corrupted Dungeon in one of the base game dungeons.
If you do not want to get in on the expansion, there is still additional free content in the game now for all players. Whether it is new familiars or an annoying bird that gets stuck in your shop, the game continues to add more content for everyone.
Moonlighter: Between Dimensions is Moonlighter to 11
When it comes down to it, Moonlighter: Between Dimensions is Moonlighter cranked up to 11. The new dungeon and enemies are fun to take on, and all the new weapons will leave a lot of content to come back to.
The only knock I have against this expansion is the look of the dungeon itself. The base game dungeons all had a distinctive and interesting style, but the new dungeon looks bland and uninteresting.
What makes that more bizarre is that everything else in the game looks amazing. Your small town has this fun mix of classic fantasy mixed with high-tech science fiction, and the new weapons all have a distinctive look.
However, that does mean for someone that was not a fan of the original game this might not be for them. Even if you were turned off by the game originally, it has changed in a lot of ways that it is worth taking another look at.
Moonlighter Expansion Expands Game For Low Price
Another positive for the expansion is its price. Moonlighter: Between Dimensions costs $6.99, which given the amount of content is quite the steal. In the age of DLC packs with expensive season passes, it is refreshing to have a game give you a sizable content drop for a good price.
If you have not played Moonlighter, to begin with, I would recommend purchasing the expansion along with the base game. Even if you don’t get all the way to the new dungeon, the new items and abilities will add a lot to the base game.
Verdict: Moonlighter: Between Dimensions adds a boatload of mid and endgame content at a moderate price. Whether you are a fan of the original game looking to jump back in or discovering the game for the first time, it hits all the right notes.
