Jason Voorhees is one of the most iconic villains in slasher cinema, but the Friday the 13th star has never been invited to the Mortal Kombat tournament, until now. The soon-to-be-released Mortal Kombat XÂ is adding the legendary goon as a special playable character, but only if you plan to dig deeper into your pockets for what is already one of the most anticipated games in the MK series’ history.
If you want to play as the Crystal Lake killer in Mortal Kombat X, you’ll have to toss down an additional $29.99 to grab the Kombat Pack, which is billed to feature “iconic guest characters” as well as “Klassic MK Kombatants.” Themed skin packs are also a part of the deal, however, the interest of such paid-for downloadable content will likely hinge on the special characters, like Jason. The pack is alternatively known as the Kombat Pass and will see its value played out throughout the season, as opposed to its contents being available all at once.
Mortal Kombat X won’t be the first time the series has dipped into Hollywood’s world of horror, either. Most notably, Mortal Kombat 9 featured Freddy Krueger as one of its many DLC characters, although with the lumbering style of Jason it will be curious to see how they manage to fit him into the fast-paced universe of Mortal Kombat.
If you don’t want to hunker down the extra $30 for just the Kombat Pack, you could alternatively look to one of the broader packages available that happen to include the pack. The Kollector’s Edition is a staggering $149.99 but offers the Kombat Pack as well as physical goodies, like a Scorpion figurine made by Coarse, and Goro as a playable character. The Kombat Pack, as well as Goro (with pre-order), are also available in the Premium edition for $80.99 and Limited Edition for $99.99.
Mortal Kombat X is set to release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 14th. Xbox 360 and PS3 fans will have to wait a bit longer, however, as the game has been delayed on those platforms until the summer.
