Coming in at the perfect time for International Women’s Day, Marvel has released MPower, a four-part Disney Plus series that celebrates the women within the company’s history. It will include background on the making of iconic comic book heroines, interviews with cast members of the MCU, and more.
Plenty of fan favorites from the MCU make an appearance in MPower, including Zoe Saldaña, who served as executive producer for the Disney Plus series. In the trailer, we see Elizabeth Olsen, Angela Bassett, and Florence Kasumba talking about their journeys in the MCU and what the representation of women and women of color does for the world.
Disney Plus’ MPower celebrates women, including Marvel characters and stars
The episode breakdown covers specific character(s) with the stars who play them. The first is The Women of Black Panther, which looks at the comic origins of characters Okoye (Danai Gurira), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Ayo (Kasumba), and Shuri (Letitia Wright), the African influences, and interviews with the stars. Captain Marvel (Larson) gets her episode that examines her origins and transformation, including the women looking up to her and assisting her with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). The journey of villain to hero and back to villain for Scarlet Witch (Olsen) gets a spotlight alongside antagonist Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and ally Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings). The finale celebrates Gamora (Saldaña) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who went through brutal upbringings by Thanos and then found family with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Delivering a docuseries is nothing new for Marvel as it has utilized Disney Plus for insight into its films and shows, as seen with MPower. Assembled delivers a behind-the-scenes look at the process of making a Marvel Studios project. It recently released a look at the making of the music of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever.
