For those who want witty and chaotic dungeon fun with friends, the card game Munchkin has long been a go-to option. Next year, the Munchkin experience will be hitting digital formats.
In a press release on Friday, it was announced that creator Steve Jackson Games Inc. is partnering with Asmodee Digital to bring the extremely popular card game to the digital world. Asmodee Digital is no stranger to digital board gaming. The company has produced mobile and PC versions of such renowned games as Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, and Smash Up.
Munchkin is a tongue-in-cheek parody of Dungeons & Dragons that focuses on the character building without any of the pretentious roleplaying. It presents a wild, random, pun-filled adventure for up to six players.
No information about platforms or a release date was revealed beyond the statement that the game will be “coming to digital platforms in 2018.” The digital version will “put everything players love about Munchkin at their fingertips.”
Here’s more from the press release.
Designed by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic, Munchkin is the mega-hit card game about dungeon adventure… minus all that pesky roleplaying business. Friends compete to kill monsters and grab hilarious magic items, like the Horny Helmet, Boots of Butt-Kicking, Staff of Napalm, and Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. While their opponents are busy giggling, players are free to backstab friends, steal their stuff, grab the treasure and run!
Without the standard, long-winded RPG elements, Munchkin is not only fun and fast paced, it’s easily one of the most accessible games of its genre.
“We are thrilled to partner with Asmodee Digital for the first adaptation of Munchkin to digital platforms. Munchkin has become an evergreen game over the years and we believe the time has come to offer fans around the world a truly innovative experience,” says Phil Reed, CEO of Steve Jackson Games.
The program, on behalf of Steve Jackson Games, was brokered by Surge Licensing, Inc.
With a virtually limitless amount of expansions and spin-offs, Munchkin will attempt to continue its success in a new format. Next year will tell whether the game can thrive in a digital setting.
