Mutts’ creator Patrick McDonnell is paying tribute to Marvel comics with a new graphic novel. The creator of the popular comic strip honors some of Marvel’s greatest creators like Jack Kirby and Stan Lee with the work. Fittingly titled The Super Hero’s Journey, the graphic novel is a love letter to the Marvel heroes of the 60’s.
Patrick McDonnell Dream Come True
Per CBR, Patrick McDonnell used this new graphic to honor those legendary creators that inspired him. According to him, The Super Hero’s Journey is his “graphic novel love letter to the 1960’s Marvel Super Heroes” and their creators. Not to mention this was a childhood dream for the cartoonist. He dreamed of having his art “play along with the work of the great Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko”.
With such a big task, Mcdonnell tried to capture the “magic, fun, and cosmic energy” of those early comic books. And if the psychedelic cover is anything to go by, he did. While there are no “mutts” to be seen, the cartoonist did capture the look of Marvel from the 1960’s. Complete with Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, and Black Panther.
The Super Hero’s Journey
The graphic novel begins with the Marvel entity known as the Watcher. This being, which featured heavily in Marvel’s recent What If… series, exists outside of time and space. He keeps an eye on all the moments of Earth that can, have, and are happening. This leads him to see Doctor Doom planning some evil with the power of the Negative Zone.
From there, Mr. Fantastic is led on a journey that takes him through the pages of classic Marvel comics. Along the way, he gathers other Marvel heroes. Together, they put an end to Doctor Doom in a surprising way. One that will leave readers with a new love for comics and Marvel.
