Those of you craving another comic book based TV show can relax because NBC has you covered. The network is due to adapt the graphic novel Witchblade. This is exciting because, if done right, this show could be the next Buffy.
According to Hollywoodreporter.com;
“Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the Sony Pictures Television drama centers on homicide detective Sara Pezzini, who’s on the hunt for an elusive serial killer and must navigate the grisly streets and police politics of San Francisco’s Mission District — until one day, the bracelet she has worn her entire life gives her supernatural insight into a crime she’s trying to solve. Her bracelet is the Witchblade, an amulet that has been worn by remarkable women throughout history, and Sara is next in line.”
Witchblade looks like it’ll join the growing number of shows with strong female leads. The show will be written and produced by Caroline Dries. Dries, who is due to wrap The Vampire Diaries soon, will be joined by Brian Young. Young worked with Dries on diaries.
This marks NBC’s return to the superhero genre since they canceled Constantine back in 2015. DC’s sour British magic user didn’t make it past one season. NBC’s decision is likely due to Grimm ending its run later this year.
NBC aren’t the first to adapt Witchblade. TNT previously took a stab at bringing it to TV and it lasted two seasons. It has also been adapted as an anime, manga, and novel. There were even plans for a movie, yet they never came to anything.
