In the collecting world, everything is meant to be forever. When the difference between quality is quite literally the amount of air the item has been exposed to, the minute changes are everything. As Nintendo products have sold for high values before, it has now become the most expensive video game collectible as well. The original Super Mario Bros has officially become the most expensive video game collector’s item ever sold for a total of $660,000 at auction. A listing not just significant for its price but also the rarity of the specific Super Mario title sold.

There are so many ways to identify aboriginal Super Mario Bros packaging due to the wild success of the title. The rarest and most sought after, and the copy in the auction, is the original black box solo cartridge that omits a trademark for the NES title. The box also boasts a 9.6-grade seal which is extremely rare for a piece of technology almost 40 years old. This “one code” game is part of some of the original releases for Super Mario Bros in 1985 and still comes with a retailer hang tab, something collectors view as an addition to the box’s quality. This sale currently beats the original world record holder of the most expensive video game collectible sold last year of the Nintendo PlayStation prototype also sold by Heritage Auctions. The newest and most expensive piece of video game collectibles has officially been sold after a Super Mario Bros 3 copy held the record for several years at a price of just over 100k. While it’s unknown how much more expensive video game collectibles can get, it’s sure to continue including bigger and more expensive purchases on classic games.
