Netflix Exclusive, Spencer Confidential, Stars Wahlberg and Arkin
Netflix will release an exclusive feature film, Spencer Confidential, that stars Mark Wahlberg and Alan Arkin on March 6. An adaptation of the late Robert B. Parker, Spencer, stories rebooted by report/novelist Ace Atkins, the film will be Wahlberg’s fifth collaboration with director Peter Berg. Berg has directed action hits such as The Rundown, The Kingdom, and Lone Survivor and also has a storied acting career.
Wahlberg will portray Spencer, an ex-police officer just released from prison and eager to get out of his old stomping ground of Boston, Massachusetts, but accepts a job with his former boxing coach (Allan Arkin) to train a rising amateur. The boxing trainee is Hawk (Winston Duke), an MMA fighter determined to be the best. Upon hearing of the deaths of two of his former colleagues, Spencer and Hawk decide to investigate the murders and find the cop killer.
The story’s been done plenty of times but who doesn’t enjoy Wahlberg’s action antics, especially after he’s proven himself as a comedic actor alongside greats like Will Ferrell, Seth MacFarlane, and Giovanni Ribisi? Wahlberg also revealed that he’d be open to doing a sequel. Comedian and podcaster Marc Maron also have a part in the film you can learn more about director Peter Berg in Maron’s interview with him.

The original source material for Spencer Confidential comes from Robert B. Parker’s Spencer novels about a fictional private detective based in Boston, Massachusetts. The ABC network published a television series based on Parker’s books called Spencer: For Hire in the 1980s. After Parker’s death in 2010, reporter and novelist Ace Atkins were chosen by the Robert B. Parker estate to continue the character with his own series of Spencer books. Atkins has also published his crime fiction novels, many of which are based on his career as a reporter.
