The (Live-Action) Archies: Global Love for the Comics
The Archies musical was first announced in November 2021. Zoya Akhtar is directing the movie alongside writers Reema Kagti and Ayesha Devitre. Tiger Baby Films is also directing the collaboration between Archie Comics and Graphic India. The film plans to bring the classic band to India, and as the description says is, “bursting with youth, rebellion, friendships, first loves, and everything young adult.”
When the movie was first announced, Ahktar shared in a written statement,
I am super excited to have the chance to bring The Archies to life. It was a large part of my childhood and teenage years. The characters are iconic and globally loved, which is also why I’m a little nervous. I have to make sure the film stokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up on the comic and yet resonates with the young adults today.
The Archies is based on the Archie Comics (first published in 1941). Publisher John Goldwater, artist Bob Montana, and writer Vic Bloom all shared their excitement for the movie. They also stated they were honored that the comic stories resonated with fans globally for more than 50 years.
No other plot details have been released about The Archies as of now. But, it also does not have a release date, although it is expected sometime in 2023.
