Netflix has officially renewed The Umbrella Academy for season 4, but news of the renewal also comes with the reveal that the show’s fourth season will be the last. The Umbrella Academy season 3 concluded one month ago on a cliffhanger – as it did with seasons one and two – leaving the fate of the Hargreeves siblings in the balance and leaving fans on the edge of their seats as they wait for the next season.
The Umbrella Academy, which was first released to Netflix in 2019, follows the seven Hargreeves siblings, the adopted children of eccentric billionaire Reginald Hargreeves who were trained to be a top-notch crimefighting team as children but eventually fell apart, with some of the siblings dying or, like Five, becoming lost in time. The siblings were initially forced to reunite and save the world in season 1 of The Umbrella Academy, only to be thrown back in time to the 1960s and have to save the world again in season 2, which premiered in 2020.
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy was released in June 2022 and sees the Hargreeves siblings forced to tackle a time paradox caused by their actions in the previous season; the siblings return to the present to find they’ve been replaced by the Sparrow Academy, with their previously-dead brother Ben (Justin H. Min) at the helm. With a time paradox known as the Kugelblitz tearing the world apart around them, the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy are forced to work together to reset the timeline, with unexpected bonds forming between some of the Hargreeves.
Everything We Know About ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4
Not much has been revealed about the plot of Umbrella Academy season 4 yet, leaving fans to wait with a cliffhanger for a little bit longer, but showrunner Steve Blackman has confirmed that series regulars Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, and Elliot Page will be returning for the new season to play Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, Ben, and Viktor Hargreeves, along with Rita Arya as Lila Pitts and Colm Feore as Reginald Hargreeves, according to Deadline.
Interestingly, Adam Godley (Phinneus Pogo) is not on the list of returning characters, and neither is Genesis Rodriguez, who plays Sloane Hargreeves, or Britne Oldford, who plays Fei Hargreeves. These omissions aren’t terribly surprising, given that the season 3 finale of The Umbrella Academy left many of the characters with unknown futures, but it does bode for an interesting final season.
Regarding the renewal and conclusion of The Umbrella Academy, Steve Blackman also released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, stating the following:
“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago. But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”
Even with the end of The Umbrella Academy near, Polygon reports that Blackman is set to have his hands full with developing a small-screen adaptation of the Horizon: Zero Dawn video games and the limited series Orbital, a thriller series set aboard the International Space Station.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be produced by Blackman alongside co-showrunner Jesse McKeown and producers Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Scott Stuber, and Beau Bauman. Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá return as co-executive producers. Seasons one through three of The Umbrella Academy are currently available on Netflix, ranking in the platform’s top three programs. No information on when season 4 will be released is currently available.
