“Baby’s first comic book” got its first trailer by Netflix earlier today. That’s right, you heard me correctly. Netflix is making comics now. And apparently comic books have trailers now? I don’t know. I guess that’s what you get when you combine Netflix with anything else other than movies and television.
The comic book, The Magic Order, is the company’s first attempt at a comic book series since their acquisition of Millarworld last August. It’ll be published by Image Comics and written by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Civil War) and illustrated by Oliver Copiel (Thor, Avengers). It’ll be a six-issue miniseries about five families of magicians of who use their powers to help fight off evil forces in the shadows. It’s set to hit comic book stores on June 13.
The most important thing to know about this new comic is that there will be no second chances. Meaning, if you don’t get an issue before it sells out, then you won’t be able to get a physical copy anywhere (unless someone has a used one, etc., etc.). Although the case, digital copies of the series will be available for the same price as the hard copies, $3.99, and are available to pre-order today. Especially since they’re the same price, it’s worth just picking up a hard copy.
Millar noted on Twitter that there have already been over 140,000 orders for the first issue of the Netflix original series. The Magic Order is getting a lot of attention right now because it’s Netflix’s first attempt at comics. Normally, top-selling issues each month reach around the 100,000 – 200,000 mark, without really reaching much higher.
Millar also stated the reason to comic retailers as to why Image won’t be publishing a second printing of The Magic Order, making it imperative for you to make a move NOW. “We want to get back to that crazy, exciting time where a first printing really meant something too and create a real collectibility here with NO SECOND PRINTINGS. We love the idea of making this genuinely sought after. So after inventory on the first and, only print run is depleted, there will be no additional printings. That said, we’re very, very sure this is going to sell out.”
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Millar said that The Magic Order is a comic book “for the kids who enjoyed something like Harry Potter or that kind of genre growing up now having something that appeals to their adult sensibilities.” He went on to say that “there’s a Neo or a Luke Skywalker when you’re having a new world explained to you, someone you identify with and whose journey you can relate to. This is a little different because it starts when we’re already deep into it. The idea is that all those myths and monsters we heard about as kids were real, but they have pushed back into the darkness a thousand years ago. Now we’ve cemented over all the madness with cities and we live these lovely peaceful lives where nobody’s ever really seen a ghost, and these guys are the reason why.”
