The Netflix axe swings again, and this time, a serial killer thriller is its victim. According to showrunner David Fincher, Mindhunter will not be returning for a third season in the foreseeable future.
Fincher commented on Mindhunter’s future to Vulture in an interview about his new film, Mank. When asked whether or not the show was finished, Fincher commented:
I think probably. Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about “Finish Mank and then see how you feel,” but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.
Fincher went on to comment on how exhausting it was to complete the first two seasons of Mindhunter. Season one was completed without a showrunner, and Fincher basically had all of season two rewritten after an unsatisfactory script. He went on to say that 90-hour work weeks were the norm on set, “It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.”
In the end, this doesn’t come as a huge shocker as Mindhunter stars were released from their contracts at the beginning of this year. However, EW reports that a spokesperson with Fincher said, “Maybe in five years.” So, maybe all hope isn’t lost for another season.
The first two seasons are available, in full, on Netflix now. But, hopefully, this won’t be the last we hear from this stellar series.
