David Blue Garcia, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), admits to having high hopes for a sequel to his newly debuted film. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) is a direct sequel to the original 1974 film. However, the film has Garcia making his own path in the iconic world of Leatherface and his victims.
Fans of the original film will be surprised to see the original final girl Sally Hardesty is back. Olwen Fouere is stepping in for Marilyn Burns, who passed away in 2014. The story follows Sally, who is now a local sheriff. She waits fifty years to take her revenge on Leatherface and has no worries about bearing arms to do so.
The Legacy Set for Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Garcia admits that despite seeing all of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films, he doesn’t have extensive knowledge of the franchise. Despite this, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre really captured his imagination. He also states that the original film set the tone that he wanted to achieve with Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Garcia also notes,
My first encounter with the movie was on cable. I was probably 13, 13 years old, and as soon as Leatherface showed up I got really freaked out and turned the TV off. I didn’t know what I was watching.
David Blue Garcia came up as a photographer with his first feature film, Tejano. The film garnered enough attention that Don’t Breathe filmmaker Fede Alvarez sought to bring the Texas slasher to life once again.
Netflix and Garcia’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) is yet another entry into the “legacy sequels.” This film genre was popularized by David Gordon’s Green’s Halloween Kills and Radio Silence’s Scream.
While many are excited about the film’s release, others have voiced their own problems about the film. Many accuse the film of copying Laurie Strode’s Halloween arc. However, much like Leatherface, Sally will explore the cycle of violence and violence inflicted on them.
David Blue Garcia’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) is available to stream on Netflix.
