Marvel has released six new Black Widow character posters and new images for the upcoming movie, giving us a sneak-a-peek of the main cast. There’s a poster for the villain Taskmaster, as well as Natasha’s found “family” played by Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour. Check out the new Black Widow character posters below.
Development of a Black Widow film began in April 2004 by Lionsgate, with David Hayter attached to write and direct. The project did not move forward and the film rights to the character reverted to Marvel Studios by June 2006. Johansson was cast in the role for several MCU films beginning with Iron Man 2 (2010). Marvel and Johansson expressed interest in a solo film several times over the following years before Schaeffer and Shortland were hired in 2018. Benson and Pearson were added later. Filming took place from May to October in Norway, Budapest, Morocco, Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom, and in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia.
Released today, the new Black Widow character posters give us a more detailed insight on the interesting choice of costumes, also seen on the released images of the movie, where Natasha drops the usual black suit we’ve seen in the previous titles.
Disney had previously delayed Black Widow multiple times because of the COVID pandemic. The studio has finally settled on a July release date. Black Widow will also be released on Disney Plus Premier Access, meaning Disney Plus subscribers can pay an additional $30 to watch Black Widow at home the same day it premieres in theatres. Other Disney Plus Marvel adventures include WandaVision and the recently announced Hawkeye spinoff series.
Black Widow’s events take place in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff travels back to Russia to solve some unfinished business and reunites with her adopted family including her sister Yelena Belova (Pugh), father, a Russian super-soldier called the Red Guardian (Harbour), and mother, spy, and previous Black Widow, Melina Vostokoff (Weisz).
This was a major change as Disney’s CEO insisted earlier this year that Black Widow would remain a theatres-only release. But as the pandemic continues despite the latest updates in regards of the development of vaccines, Disney changed course and will finally release Black Widow a year after it was originally supposed to be released in May 2020. Black Widow will be the first MCU movie in Phase 4, following the advent of WandaVision that served as an introduction for it. The movie will be followed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in September, and Eternals in November.
