When I heard that a new Candyman movie was in the works, I have to admit that I was far from excited. Modern takes of classic horror films don’t often work that well. There have been some exceptions. I loved the 2013 version of Evil Dead, but on the whole, they have been a mixed bag.
Later I learned that 2020’s Candyman was to be produced and co-written by Jordan Peele, will act as a sequel to the original, and will bring back the legend that is Tony Todd in the title role. This news somewhat piqued my interest in the movie.
Originally due to release on June 17th, Candyman was pushed back to September due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The film has already released one teaser. Let’s take a look at this new trailer and see what’s new:
While it doesn’t give too much away (which is nice for a trailer), I must say the footage is extremely stylish. The teaser gives fans a look at Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character of Anthony McCoy, a failing artist who becomes obsessed with the legend of Candyman and starts to explore him in his works.
I wonder how much Candyman will actually feature and whether the movie will just be a descent into madness. Either way, it looks exciting.
Candyman will release on September 25th, 2020, and is directed by Nia DaCosta, who also co-wrote the screenplay along with Peele and Win Rosenfeld. Alongside Abdul-Mateen II, the movie features Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Rebecca Spence, Vanessa Williams, and of course, Tony Todd.
I’m still slightly apprehensive about the release, but I feel that it couldn’t be in better hands. What are your thoughts on this trailer? Let us know in the comments and repeat after me, Candyman, Candyman, Candy…..on second thoughts, maybe don’t.
