It’s Wednesday again and you know what that means: It’s new comic day! There’s a fresh batch of comics waiting at your local comic shop, here are a few highlights of what’s available this week on the stands:
Secret Empire #8
Steve Rogers has taken over America with the aid of Hydra! Mutants have been deported to a chunk of California called New Tian! New York City is enveloped in a dome of magical darkness! The Earth’s strongest defenders are trapped in space outside an impenetrable force field! Las Vegas has been wiped out by floating weapons platforms as a show of ultimate force by the Supreme Commander himself. Things are not going great for the heroes that seek an America free from the tyrannical rule of the former Captain America.
Secret Empire, which many fans discounted because of the core concept, has turned out to be a fascinating and chaotic event that has brought together unlikely allies, heroes, and villains alike. Reeling from the death of a central character in issue #7, the enemies of Hydra are teed up to do almost anything to take back the government from Rogers’, while Rogers himself might have lost his last few connections to humanity.
Sam Wilson, formerly the Falcon and current holder of Cap’s classic indestructible round shield, is pulled back from semi-retirement ushering refugees to Canada through a magical subway line. This issue will likely see some serious Cap-on-Cap violence.
Amazing Spider-Man #31
(Secret Empire Tie-In) Peter Parker, after returning from a paramilitary operation overseas liberating a nation from an army of Green Goblins, found a country on the verge of chaos as Hydra takes over. Doctor Octopus, in a new body with new powers and better arms, set out to steal the secrets of Parker Industries for Hydra as a member of Steve Roger’s new Avengers roster.
It’s so delightfully convoluted, but a number of seeds planted over the last year are finally sprouting into some fascinating chaos for the elder Spider-Man.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1955 Secret Nature (One Shot)
A standalone adventure where the Right Hand of Doom heads to Oregon and confronts a cryptozoological horror with origins similar to his own featuring art by Thief of Thieves artist Shawn Martinbrough.
Action Comics #985
Action begins an arc called ‘Eve of Destruction’ with a classic premise, Lex, and Supes teaming up to save a planet on the verge of chaos. Will Lex finally be trustworthy? Probably not.
