The first trailer for Olivia Wilde’s upcoming thriller, Don’t Worry Darling, starring Harry Styles and Florence Pugh, has recently been released, giving the audience their first full look into the unsettling world of the Victory Project and the 1950s.
Don’t Worry Darling centers around Jack (Harry Styles) and his loving wife Alice (Florence Pugh) as they live a seemingly happy and carefree life in 1950s suburbia, deeply in love with one another. The trailer shows the pair laughing and dancing among fellow husbands and wives, driving fast cars, and cuddling together in bed before the music changes and the trailer takes a turn for the creepy.
In a voiceover for the trailer, Chris Pine – who stars as Frank – explains that husbands ask a lot of their wives; strength, food, a clean home, and, above all else, discretion. Jack and Alice join an experiment run by Jack’s employers called “The Victory Project,” described by the Hollywood Reporter as a “utopian experimental community.” In the community, Alice and her fellow housewives, Mary (Olivia Wilde), Shelley (Gemma Chan), Margaret (KiKi Layne), Peg (Kate Berlant), and Anna (Wylie Quinn Anderson), are sequestered away in a single area of the compound and told to never venture outside of their designated space, whatever happens.
Meanwhile, the husbands, including Jack, Frank, Bill (Nick Kroll), John (Douglas Smith), Dean (Timothy Simons), Peter (Asif Ali), and Kevin (Ari’el Stachel), get up to mysterious and unknown activities as a part of the Victory Project. In the trailer, when Alice begins to question what their husbands really get up to, Mary responds with, “The one thing they ask of us is to stay here, where it’s safe.”
From that point, Don’t Worry Darling seems to descend into horrifying chaos as the trailer jumps between shots of Alice flipping through folders of redacted information, being grabbed by men in red jumpsuits, and a group of the husbands in those same red jumpsuits scrambling up a mountain. Alice pleads with the housewives, begging someone to understand that they’re being lied to, only to be stonewalled by Jack, who orders her to stop asking, showing the decay of their relationship.
The trailer for Don’t Worry Darling, directed by Olivia Wilde, first debuted at CinemaCon on April 26th. The movie is scheduled for release on September 23rd, 2022.
