Toei Animation and Akira Toriyama announced that a new Dragon Ball Super film is coming in 2022. As of now there was not much revealed plot-wise about the oncoming movie. But, Toriyama (the original creator) shared a message for fans in the new announcement. In his message, he tells fans to ” be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character.”
The movie also does not have an official title as of yet. But at the same time, Toei says that this film has been in the works since 2018. In the official statement from the company, Toriyama also mentions that the film would be “charting through some unexpected territory in terms of the visual aesthetic to give the audience an amazing ride.”
As stated before, this announcement comes as a part of the “Goku Day” celebration, which celebrates the franchise’s 37-year run. The making of this film also marks the first new animation since the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Since its initial release, the film holds the record for the highest-grossing film of the Dragon Ball franchise ($120 USD).
Will it Be Canon?
There is no speculation if this film will follow the canon series, but the manga has progressed past the Tournament of Power Arc (where the anime is currently on hiatus) in Dragon Ball Super. In seeing that the TOP arc is an official story with a lot more to tell after, the chances of the upcoming movie being the Moro or Granollah The Survivor Arc is also more than likely (based on Toriyama’s past involvement with the Dragon Ball Super franchise).
But as many other Dragon Ball fans know, the franchise has created films that are both in and out of plot continuity. Even though villains such as Broly, Janemba, Bojack, Turles, and many others are a part of plots that others say “do not count”, these fan-loved villains have found their way into other stories and spin-off series.
