Ready for more adventure of Goku and his friends again (relatively) soon? Apparently, Toei Animation Europe’s website accidentally leaks that a new Dragon Ball Super movie will be released sometime in 2022, according to a popular Dragon Ball fansite Kanzenshuu. The announcement was only visible through Similar Articles functionality and noted that the official reveal will be dropped on “Goku Day”, or May 9, tomorrow.
Why May 9 equals Goku Day, you asks? It’s simply a wordplay on Goku; go is Japanese for five and kuu/kyuu is nine. The Japanese really love their puns. The article was also visible on Google cache for some time but it has since been removed.
Kanzenshuu also managed to save a quote from Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama on the reveal. Here’s what he has to say about the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie.
An all new movie since Dragon Ball Super: Broly is currently in the making! Just like the previous movie, I’m heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film. I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character. We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!“
The fansite added that the head of Shueisha’s Dragon Ball-related think tank division — aptly named Dragon Ball Room — Akio Iyoku has actually teased about the new Dragon Ball Super movie project back in June 2019. He was quoted in a bonus booklet of the home video release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Preparations are now steadily underway for the next Dragon Ball movie. [Broly] was too powerful, so I think it will probably go in an entirely different direction next time. There were parts in the film where we ended up raising the bar, so we have to be careful to avoid burnout. I think Dragon Ball will continue on in the future, so I hope everyone looks forward to it“
Considering the Broly movie finally made the Legendary Super Saiyan be part of the official canon, who else do you hope to get the same treatment? A Cooler movie, perhaps? Or a completely original storyline instead? Tell us what you think and your wishes are in the comments below.
