The new Dune movie is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune book. This new take on it comes to us from Canadian director Denis Villeneuve. Ever since David Lynch’s rendition of Dune back in 1984, there had been a constant clamoring for something else. I can’t say if another attempt is needed to bring to life this space opera-epic, but it does seem that the 1984 Dune movie was praised as a good effort, as many thought it failed to catch the essence of the Dune book franchise. Today’s trailer gives us a better idea of what entails us when we travel to the desert planet of Arrakis. The Nerdist caught wind of the trailer as it dropped in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune
What I hope excites most about this new Dune movie is that arguably one of the better directors of our lifetimes, Denis Villeneuve, is behind this potential blockbuster epic. And with the likes of Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival under his belt, this is sure to be an action-packed ride with more twists and turns than a bucket of snakes. Out of all his films, the one I would recommend to really get some insight into what Denis Villeneuve is about is the 2010 drama named Incendies. I won’t tell you anything about it, nor should you watch a trailer or read a synopsis. Trust me, go in cold and watch it.
If you can’t wait for the new Dune movie and if you already watched Incendies, I suggest watching a documentary that might curve your need for the spice. A documentary by the name of Jodorowsky’s Dune was released back in 2013, and it tackles all the hurdles the book has gone through to be made in the epic it appears to be. This 2013 documentary takes a look at Alejandro Jodorowsky’s take on the popular book franchise. Along with all the pitfalls. There are some visuals in that doc that I still think about to this day, especially the shot-up pirate ship, as it spills out the much sought-after spice.
