The latest trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has dropped, and it revealed a brand new character for the film franchise and one that is eerily familiar to long-time fans of the Ghostbusters.
It’s been a hot minute since we learned anything new about Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the upcoming sequel to the world-famous Ghostbusters franchise set to release in November 2021. However, the latest trailer released by Sony Pictures has made the wait well worth it.
In the latest preview, Paul Rudd’s character, Mr. Grooberson, runs into an all-new mystical entity for the series, the cute little Mini-Pufts, on a trip to the grocery store. As with all monsters in the Ghostbusters universe, it doesn’t matter how cute they are; they are also incredibly destructive.
The Mini-Pufts are, as the name suggests, miniature versions of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the original film of the franchise and, if anything, appear to be even greater agents of chaos than their predecessor despite also being very cute.
Ghostbusters is easily one of the most famous and popular supernatural comedy films to come out of Hollywood. It might even be among the most popular movie franchises, regardless of the genre, with millions of fans worldwide.
Aside from the franchise’s films, its popularity has seen it appear in many other forms of media, such as the graphic novel series Ghostbusters: Year One, released in 2020. There is also Ghostbusters: The Video Game released in 2019 that holds a 94% approval rating among Google users. There is also a slot game titled Ghostbusters Plus that can be played on various online casinos such as MGM online casino.
Recent additions to the franchise have not been as popular as the original two films, so creating a new and familiar monster to long-time fans of Ghostbusters is a stroke of genius by the creative forces behind Afterlife. It establishes that familiar nostalgic feeling that attaches people to the brand while also bringing something new and exciting to the story for everyone to enjoy.
Another positive takeaway from the latest trailer was the clear comedic elements at play. Early trailers for Ghostbusters: Afterlife carried a very dark tone that was more reminiscent of a science-fiction epic than a supernatural comedy that had fans worried a significant tone shift was on the franchise cards. However, this trailer has shown enough light-heartedness and comedy to alleviate those concerns.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the fourth film in the Ghostbusters franchise and a direct sequel to the first and second films released in 1984 and 1989. The third film, released in 2016, was a reboot of the series rather than a sequel.
The film follows the story of a single mom of two kids who are forced to move back to Summerville, Oklahoma, where they find out about their link to the original Ghostbusters. It stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and Paul Rudd in the leading roles. However, Rudd is not the only star from the original two films returning with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts, all slated to appear at some point.
Initially set to be released in July 2020, Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been delayed three times, but its current release date of 11 November 2021 is set in stone. Unlike many other modern Hollywood blockbusters that have opted for a digital release on streaming platforms, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is sticking to a theatre release and available in IMAX, RealD 3D, and Dolby Cinema.
