Marvel’s new Guardians of the Galaxy team is set to debut in a new comic later this year. The series comes from writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Kev Walker. While we must wait until April for the new series, we do know that Lanzing and Kelly are taking the cosmic heroes on a darker and more western path. However, the writing duo doesn’t plan on ignoring the happy ending set up in the previous Guardians series.
Looking to the Past to Inspire the Future
In an exclusive interview with CBR, Lanzing and Kelly teased what readers can expect from their new Guardians of the Galaxy series. This includes explaining how they are handling the happy ending given to the planet-hopping heroes in Al Ewing’s previous run. Running from January 2020 to September 2021, Ewing’s Guardians run ended on a positive note. The final scene showed the team happy and celebrating a big victory together. As such, Lanzing and Kelly didn’t want to completely ignore that happy ending.
Lanzing shared that the two discussed it with Ewing. While the way that series ended “was an amazing end for that story,” those happy times can’t last forever. So, the upcoming series will tell “the story of what happens when all of that goes wrong, when that peace, happiness, and beauty is shattered. Otherwise, there’s no drama.”
Why Is There A New Guardians of the Galaxy Team?
A big part of the drama taking place with Marvel’s new Guardians of the Galaxy team is the absence of two fan-favorite characters. Lanzing and Allen previously revealed that Groot and Rocket Racoon are not part of the main lineup for this run. This stems from a “Grootfall” like event taking place in the series. Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Mantis, and Nebula are the team’s surviving members. However, Groot and Rocket may appear somewhere down the road.
Again, this event is linked to Ewing’s ending. Lanzing shared that the worst day in the Guardian’s history takes place between Al’s end and the beginning of this new series. As such, “the mystery of what happened that day, how it happened, who was responsible, and who thinks they’re responsible will all come out over the course of the run.”
