Square Enix sold several of its Western studios last month, including Deus Ex and Tomb Raider developers, but Avalanche Studios is still in its pocket. On the other hand, the Japanese company owns the rights to the Just Cause franchise and says it has big plans. A new Just Cause 5 game is finally coming after four years.
Square Enix revealed that a new game in the Just Cause series is currently in development. The information came through the publisher’s last financial report presented to investors. It is not known whether the new project will be a sequel to the fourth game or a spin-off of the saga.
In addition, Avalanche Studios posted a job advertisement on their website saying they are looking for a senior producer for a yet-to-be-announced AAA open-world game that will use the latest technology.
Square Enix Confirms New Just Cause in Development
It’s not clear whether this is information about a completely new title -probably Just Cause 5– or the upcoming Just Cause: Mobile for smartphones and tablets, which is technically currently in production. The mobile game was supposed to be released in 2021, but the premiere was postponed to 2022.
The existence of the mobile spin-off is no secret, so it should appear under its full name in a financial report. Therefore, we can assume that it is rather a continuation of the series.
We can expect the first announcement to be made during Summer Game Fest (the event will be streamed live on Twitch and YouTube) on Thursday, June 9, but that’s highly unlikely. Or it could be announced during another of the many shows scheduled for the coming weeks.
If we don’t count Just Cause: Mobile, the latest game in the series is Just Cause 4, which was released in 2018. So it’s been four years since we stepped into an action-packed world, so the sequel is late.
