Just in case you weren’t getting enough eggs in Animal Crossing, the new spring event for Mario Kart Tour is all about Yoshi, the best Nintendo character to ever hatch from an egg.
Yesterday, April 8, Nintendo revealed details for the next seasonal event in Mario Kart Tour. The tour will focus on everyone’s favorite raptor Yoshi and will bear his name. The Yoshi Tour could just as easily be called the egg tour, though. Both characters featured in the event, Yoshi and Birdo, have egg powers. Yoshi hatches from eggs in Super Mario World and later appearances, and Birdo shoots eggs as a weapon in Super Mario Bros. 2.
The event is live in-game already and runs until April 21 at 10:59 Pacific Time. Earn-able items in Yoshi Tour include the Egg Hunt version of Yoshi, Bright Bunny Kart, Bright Bunny Glider, two Birdo colors, yellow and light blue, Baby Daisy, Birthday Girl, and the Parachute glider.
For those who slept on Mario Kart Tour, the characters and Karts in the game don’t really affect the way the game plays that much and are mostly a cosmetic way to encourage players to engage in a gacha mechanic. Drivers and karts perform better on specific courses so that to perform well across the board; players need to collect a wide variety of characters.
The addition of limited-time season unlocks is one of the many design departures that Tour takes from the numbered versions of Mario Kart. Most of the racing is done automatically, with players basically just steering and choosing items to use. The game was widely criticized when it launched last year for including gacha mechanics from other mobile games as well as locking features behind a $4.99 paywall.
Imagine being a die-hard Animal Crossing and Mario Kart fan who hates eggs right now. What a nightmare.
