Marvel is introducing a new mutant into the Marvel Universe! In June’s Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1, Shela Sexton will make her debut as Escapade. She is Marvel’s newest trans mutant Super Hero and is co-created by Charlie Jane Anders. Plus, she is not alone. She will bring along her fellow trans mutant Morgan Red and their flying turtle Hibbert. Together, these two will embark on an adventure that will take them all over the globe. Even to Krakoa.
Tell Me More About This New Mutant Hero!
Charlie Jane Anders spoke with Marvel about Escapade ahead of her comic debut. She describes this new mutant hero as a “total goofball.” Yet, she retains a sense of justice and loyalty that makes her a wonderful addition to the Marvel Universe. As Escapade, Shela has the ability to switch circumstances with another person. As Anders describes it, “if you’re holding her at gunpoint, she can reverse it so she’s holding you at gunpoint.” Of course, while this power seems cool at first, there is a lot of potential for disaster.
Anders worked with Ro Stein and Ted Brandt to bring Escapade to life. Together, the three created the jumpsuit-wearing Escapade that debuts in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1. As Anders recalls, it was an absolute dream to work with the duo on Escapade’s creation. Also, they helped create Shela’s friend Morgan into the dapper character seen in the upcoming issue. Speaking of…
The Other Characters Involved
Anders explains that “chosen family” is an important part of Escapade’s story. She says she wanted Shela to “have a really strong relationship that she could be anchored to.” Therefore, she decided to make Morgan an important presence as Shela was first transitioning. The two became each other’s support during their childhoods.
From there, Morgan began to grow as a character. The two are an amazing team together, and Shela cannot accomplish as much on her own as she can with Morgan. Meanwhile, there is also a genetically flying turtle named Hibbert. Shela and Morgan “liberate” Hibbert from a secret lab. Therefore, he is acutely attuned to Morgan’s moods and feelings. Anders shares that she loves watching Hibbert’s reactions to everything Morgan does.
