Time to brush up on your Chinese folktales, everyone! A new action-adventure RPG, Black Myth: Wukong, was announced today, and it is based on the story Journey To The West—a well-known Chinese tale.
The announcement also came with an absolutely stunning trailer. Black Myth: Wukong is being developed by Game Science, and given that there is no official release date announced, it is likely to be a next-gen console game, although a PC release has also been confirmed.
The trailer has certainly added to the hype for Black Myth: Wukong. It is 13 glorious minutes of everything fans of RPGs love, mainly breathtaking landscapes, epic boss battles, stealth kills, and a major battle to round things out. The internet has spoken on Black Myth: Wukong, and it has said that it likes what it sees.
The video has several million views, and a majority of the comments have had a positive outlook. The trailer makes it easy to see why the graphics are amazing on this trailer, and the gameplay looks smooth and dynamic.
It is certainly refreshing to see a game centered on Chinese mythology and lore, especially with so many games focusing on Japanese lore. It is fascinating to be able to compare the mythical creatures from the trailer to the ones seen in games like Sekiro. It will also be interesting to see if Black Myth: Wukong will remain in Chinese at the time of release or if it will draw inspiration from Ghost of Tsushima and feature multiple language options.
Game Science has released a statement on its website regarding the development, stating that the game “shouldn’t take 500 years”—promising, I know—but that the team working on the game is quite small. Fingers crossed that Game Science can get some help with Black Myth: Wukong because it is clear that fans are eager to see more of this game.
