All right, elder Sonic fans, this one is for you. Sonic is an iconic video game character. Created and marketed in the ’80s as Super Mario’s competitor, he helped the industry boom. As a result, Sonic even scored a semi-popular movie through Paramount. Once the CGI debacle was dealt with, it performed pretty well. Recently, we’ve seen plenty of trailers for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Just yesterday, the final trailer was released. Today, an all too familiar new Sonic 2 poster was dropped. Any fans of the old Sonic games will recognize that it is a direct tribute to the Sonic 2 game box art! Likewise, it’s not the only homage this movie is making.
Sonic 2 is Loaded with Easter Eggs
The first Sonic the Hedgehog is more of an intro into the Sonic world. Sonic himself is introduced in full and realizes his potential by the end. Similarly, Dr. Robotnik has his descent into mad obsession over the lightning-fast fuzzball. The new Sonic 2 poster does an excellent job of previewing the significant events of this movie. Dr. Eggman has discovered the Master Emerald and will harness its power for himself. He’s also lied to Knuckles and blamed Sonic for its theft. If those sound familiar, it’s because they take direct inspiration from Sonic Adventure! There’s even a snowy mountain snowboard chase as well. Furthermore, we also have the premiere of Tails Prower, who first appeared in the Sonic 2 game. This movie borrows from multiple games, but it’s sure to be quite the ride.
How Much More of the Blue Blur Can We Expect?
It seems that these movies love to pay tribute to old Sonic games. And it seems more are to come! Both a sequel and a spin-off have already been announced. Details about the sequel are unknown right now. It may involve the other Chaos Emeralds, potentially meaning we could see our first appearance of Super Sonic.
Additionally, the spin-off will focus on Knuckles directly. Whether that will focus on a Knuckles Chaotix-type adventure or just the Echidna civilization is also unclear. Either way, it seems Sonic’s voice actor Ben Schwartz is ecstatic to keep on rolling around at the speed of sound.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 releases worldwide on April 8, 2022. You gotta go to those theaters fast if you want to see this experience first hand.
