Ever since the release and meteoric rise of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, excited fans have been on the edge of their seats for its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is set to come out this summer. The sequel will see Miles Morales and the characters from Into the Spider-Verse return in another comic book-styled, beautifully animated movie as they’re introduced to an entire multiverse of new characters, some of which have been featured in a new international trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, released today.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced audiences both to the Spider-Verse, or infinite parallel universes that all have their own Spider-Man (or Spider-Pig), and Miles Morales, a kid from Brooklyn who becomes his Earth’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and must team up with a team of alternate-universe Spider-People – including Gwen Stacy, an older, jaded Peter Parker, a spider-pig and a spider-robot – in order to stop the collapse of the Spider-Verse at the hands of Dr. Olivia Octavius – Liv, to her friends – and Kingpin, aka Wilson Fisk.
‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Trailer: Miles Morales vs. The Spot
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will see Shameik Moore return as a slightly older Miles Morales who reunites with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), aka Spider-Woman, and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) as he’s introduced to the Spider-Society, a group of Spider-People that from across the Spider-Verse that’s banded together to stop the Spot, a villain with the ability to create portals that has the potential to tear the multiverse apart. But when Miles clashes with Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), the leader of the Spider-Society and the intimidating Spider-Man 2099, on how to stop the threat, he’s forced to strike out on his own and “redefine what it means to be a hero,” per the official logline.
The new Across the Spider-Verse trailer, available below, provides a new look at Miles’ battle with the Spot, aka Jonathan Ohnn (Jason Schwartzman), before re-introducing Gwen Stacy, who pulls Miles through the multiverse and introduces him to the Spider-Society. The trailer gives audiences a new look at Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), aka Spider-Woman, Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), aka Spider-Man India, and Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya), aka Spider-Punk, who have all been teased in previous trailers but are now getting their own introductory shots, much like the characters from the first film. Also featured in greater detail is Miguel O’Hara, who Gwen describes as “a ninja-vampire” and says the “whole [Spider-Society] was his idea.”
From there, the trailer goes into more detail on the clash between Miguel and Miles, with the former insisting that “being Spider-Man is a sacrifice” while Miles refuses to believe he can’t save everyone he loves and the multiverse at the same time. After Miles runs away from the Spider-Society, we see Miguel, Gwen, and brand-new father Peter B. Parker pursuing him through a futuristic dimension – presumably Miguel’s Earth – and a fight on top of a speeding train with all of the Spider-People involved.
“Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go,” Miles’ voice says over dramatic, fast-paced shots of the fight. “Nah. I’mma do my own thing.”
Whatever this new trailer is hinting at, we won’t know for sure until Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 6th, but it’s safe to say that this has only made fans that much more excited for the next installment in Miles’ journey and sparked countless theories on what this means for him as a hero. Whatever happens, we’re sure it’s going to change the Spider-Verse forever – but what do you think? Do you have any theories about the new trailer? Let us know in the comments!
