“The Cuphead Show! is a character-driven comedy series following the unique misadventures of loveable, impulsive scamp Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman. As the two scour their surreal homeworld of the Inkwell Isles in search of fun and adventure, they always have each other’s back. Unless there’s only one cookie left, in which case it’s every cup for himself. The Cuphead Show! combines nostalgic delights, side-splitting gags, and a healthy dose of the heebie-jeebies—especially when a ridiculously weird nemesis, The Devil himself, arrives on the scene to toy with our heroes”, the official description reads.
The Cuphead Show trailer followed the titular Cuphead and his brother Mugman as they embarked on a carnival-themed adventure throughout the Inkwell Isles and seems to take inspiration from both modern and classical cartoons in terms of its tone and use of the same rubbery animation, slapstick violence, and surreal characters in seedy air of jazz-age cartoons that the original game makes use of.
Cuphead was known for its stunning, hand-drawn animation inspired by 1930s cartoons, and much of that style seems to be replicated in the art direction for this series. The Cuphead Show trailer featured various characters from the original game, including, of course, Cuphead and Mugman themselves. Some of the game’s more iconic bosses make appearances like Cala Maria and the frog duo Ribby and Croaks, as well as Ms. Chalice, who is set to join the Cup Bros in the upcoming Cuphead DLC, the Delicious Last Course. She retains her appearance from the DLC in the show.
