Just like other MMOs, New World has a number of fearsome bosses dotted around the open world. One of these bosses is known as Overseer Zane who you are tasked with defeating for the quest “Something to Prove.” In most ways, Zane doesn’t really do anything special compared to other bosses, but he does stand out from the pack because of a unique issue that only pertains to him. Because of this, some players might find themselves struggling to kill him, even if they fight him multiple times. This guide will help explain those issues and provide tips on how to circumvent them. This guide will show you how to defeat Overseer Zane in New World.
How to Defeat Overseer Zane in New World
To start the “Something to Prove” Quest, you need to talk to the artificer found in Everfall named Tekla Petrowski. The mission recommends you be level 16, so make sure you are prepared for the fight by being at least that level. You will find Overseer Zane in the Ebonrock Cavern in the northwestern part of Everfall. Just follow the quest marker and you will find him, but be careful when entering the cave as it is overrun with Corruption. You should have a few anti-Corruption potions on you to ensure that waiting for the boss to respawn doesn’t cause the Corruption to eat through your resistance. The reason you will likely be waiting is that many players and parties will also be trying to beat Zane, so you will need to wait for him to respawn if he had recently been defeated. He will respawn six minutes after dying.

This all sounds straightforward enough, but this is where the unique issue with Overseer Zane comes into play. With other bosses like Boatswain Ambrose, a player simply needs to tag the enemy to have the kill count for them when the boss eventually falls, but this is not the case with Zane. Players need to do a certain amount of damage to Zane (an amount that is not exactly known) in order for the kill to be counted so that you can complete the quest. This means that if a player tries to hang back or a ton of other players gang up on the boss, they won’t get the kill to count for them and will have to wait for him to respawn. The only real tip for this is to make sure that you get in Zane’s face and use Piercing weapons as that is his weakness. Don’t let up on the damage and make sure you can do as much damage as you to ensure that the kill counts for you.
New World is now available on PC through Steam.
