Streaming movies and TV is what Netflix is known for. Many movies and tv shows are not available elsewhere. But Netflix has been rumored to have plans related to gaming. But what does it actually mean for subscribers and potential customers?
Netflix Gaming Plans and What it Really Means
If you’ve been on the internet the last week, you’ve likely heard the news. It was announced they wanted to get involved with video games. But all is not as it seems when it comes to the subject. In a job listing, the Netflix streaming giant is looking for a “Director of Product Innovation, Interactive.” This would suggest Netflix has plans other than gaming. What they may actually be looking for is productions similar to Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and the interactive version of Running Wild with Bear Grylls.
While Netflix is first and foremost looking to publish games, this other sector could bolster their interactive shows to serve as a middle ground between the two. The first objective could also be to put a toe in the water with interactive properties, then follow that up with fully fledged games. Others have stated the success of Android’s Stranger Things game shows potential. While the television series was a Netflix streaming production, a separate company produced the mobile app.
Netflix will no longer just stream normal movies and televisions shows. But they must also compete with veterans like Sony and Nintendo. So what will things look like in the future? We may see anything from simple mobile apps to full-on platform titles. Running Wild with Bear Grylls was an interesting way to ‘view’ a show. It did indeed feel a bit like a video game. And making the choices felt much like weighing options in an RPG title.
What Netflix and its gaming plans truly entail remains to be seen. But it will certainly be interesting to see where they take things.
What do you think of the company’s future plans? What do you see in their future regarding the matter? Let me know in the comments!
