NHL 22 is due to release in October and already we’re hearing about a brand new feature that takes its inspiration from the Madden franchise. Comicbook is reporting that the new Superstar X-Factor system will play a pivotal role, giving the game’s biggest names more of an edge on the ice.
EA’s very own Spenser Davis gives us a broad idea of what to expect from the new Superstar X-Factor system:
X-Factors are fully integrated across game modes in NHL 22, in different ways that make the abilities shine and make a tangible difference on the ice. A specific group will get special upgradeable versions called Power-up player items in Ultimate Team; these items have a lower OVR (rating) than the usual items, but they can be upgraded to at least +1 of the base OVR. They can be upgraded to an even higher OVR throughout the season based on live content and unlock new abilities and options. Upgrade Power-up items in HUT with Coins or special Power-up collectable items.”
These abilities will affect things like slapshot speed, player speed, passing, and overall reflexes. No mention of any strength abilities that players can use to check their opponents into oblivion, but let’s wait and see.

Although Davis didn’t give up the ghost on who would get these new abilities, he did mention two of the games best in Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid and even gave a brief breakdown on how the Superstar X-Factor will work:
There are two types of X-Factor abilities in NHL 22: Zone Superstar abilities. Every player that has an X-Factor has one specific Zone ability, as well as a set of Superstar abilities that can truly help them dominate on the ice.”
NHL 22 will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 15.
