Nick Offerman has been cast in HBO‘s TV series The Last of Us. The series is an adaptation of a famous video game of the same name. Collider reports that Offerman’s casting was confirmed by an interview with actor Murray Bartlett who is also playing a role in the series. Offerman is known for his role as Ron Swanson in the sitcom Parks and Recreation. He will now join Barlett as well as Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the adaptation of Naughty Dog’s beloved game.
The Last of Us game was released in 2013 to critical and audience acclaim, with many publications and award ceremonies naming it Game of the Year. It was set in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus turns human beings into violent genetic mutations. A man named Joel scarred by tragedy travels with an evidently immune young girl named Ellie in hopes that she may carry a cure. A sequel was released in 2020. Pascal and Ramsey are portraying Joel and Ellie respectively.
Offerman’s role in the series has yet to be disclosed. As one who is more known for his comedic roles, it will be interesting to see him in such a dark story. While the series is being set up to tell the same story with many of the same characters (including Joel’s brother Tommy and daughter Sarah), some divergence has been hinted at. So there is a possibility that Offerman could be playing an entirely new character.
The Last of Us is being filmed in Calgary and it is expected to be released in 2022.
