Nintendo Acquired Dynamo Pictures: What Does That Mean?
According to the press release, upon closing the deal, Nintendo will rename Dynamo Pictures “Nintendo Pictures,” and the new subsidiary will “focus on development of visual content utilizing Nintendo IP” as well as the “planning and production of visual content including CG animation.”
Dynamo Pictures’ credentials show it has worked on several projects it has worked since its founding in 2011. It has produced visual content and motion capture work for games like Death Stranding, Persona 5, Final Fantasy 13-2, and post-production work on Metroid: Other M, so it has worked with Nintendo quite a bit in the past.
Nintendo noted that the acquisition will “only have a minor effect” on its financial results for the fiscal year and notified its shareholder that it would be acquiring 100 percent of the outstanding shares of Dynamo Pictures. The acquisition is expected to close on October 3rd, 2022.
This purchase also marks Nintendo’s second acquisition in 2022; the company also purchased long-running partner studio SRD back in February.
This acquisition is noteworthy as it comes as Nintendo is preparing to have its first major cinematic release in years with the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie starring Chris Pratt and animated by Illumination Studios. Currently, the film is scheduled to release in the spring of next year after being delayed. Ironically, this will be almost exactly thirty years after Nintendo’s last major cinematic release, which was 1993’s live-action Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, and four years after the release of the live-action adaptation of the Detective Pikachu games starting Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds, based on the Pokémon franchise.
