Nintendo has a longstanding history of working and collaborating with many partners over the years. These ventures range from the inclusions of characters in Super Smash Brothers all the way to their defined relationship with 2nd party studios like Monolith Software. They’ve cemented themselves and been surrounded by loyal developers who have contributed and created some of the best Nintendo experiences. Nintendo has always been keen on maintaining these relationships. When it comes to SRD co, LTD, they’ve continuously remained partners. While currently, the staff comprises over 140 members, System Research and Development has assisted multiple Nintendo projects. Ranging from the original Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong, SRD Co. history of Nintendo games is lengthy. So much so that almost 40 years later, Nintendo is finally acquiring SRD Co. as a first-party development studio.

Why Did Nintendo Acquire SRD Co. Only Recently?
While the news might seem random, the investment and Nintendo games SRD Co. has been responsible for is enormous. They assisted in the development of almost every entry in the Zelda series. More recently, the studio was responsible for assisting the development of Game Builder Garage. Spawning a whole other realm of creativity, the studio helped craft both Super Mario Maker entries. It’s unmistakable the creativity of the studio more than likely attracted Nintendo to purchase them outright. Furthermore, their last purchase of Luigi’s Mansion 3 developer, Next Level Games, was more than a year ago. This is the only other acquisition Nintendo has made thus far. Yet it may not be the last as the gaming industry continues to consolidate. It’s a wonder as to what the studio has in store next or as to what project they’ve been assisting with as of late.Â
