Nintendo gave us a lot to be excited for during their April Nintendo Direct 2015. Not only did they present us with some exciting announcements, but we were also given some more information on some games that have been seemingly lost over time. There wasn’t any mention of the recently delayed Zelda Wii U, but they more than made up for it with juicy bits of Nintendo goodness.
Mr. Iwata came out swinging with some SSB news, giving us a release date of April 28th for the long awaited Mewtwo DLC in addition to more costumes and items for Miis. A much-anticipated character was announced today as well: Lucas from Mother 3. Another exciting idea announced was the “Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot,” giving participants the chance to pitch characters from past Nintendo games for inclusion into Smash.
Iwata granted an in-depth look into Mario Maker, the game that allows users to create and play their own custom levels. We learned that Mario Maker will give players the option to create levels with pieces all the way from the Super Mario Bros. to  New Super Mario Bros. U. It seems that you can create easy or ridiculous levels and upload them for users all over the world.
Bill Trinen, Director Of Product Marketing Nintendo Of America Inc., gave us the most news on this lovely April Fools’ Day.  We finally heard mention of Yoshi’s Wooly World, and boy has it been a long time since this game was last seen. It’d been speculated that this side-scrolling adventure game would never see the light of day, but Nintendo lifted the curtain, giving us a Fall window for release. Not only is the game adorable, but it’s also promised to deliver a challenge. Nintendo has given the hardcore fans a classic mode to those who want the full effects of the game and “mellow mode” for the casual audience who’d rather fly through it-literally. Also, we get plushie Yoshi amiibos.
Nintendo also announced that Splatoon, their contestant in modern shooters, will have “Ranked Battle Mode,”  and it’ll surely appease the hardcore market. You can pick up the Inkling amiibos in a three pack along with the game when it’s released on May 29th.
Mr. Iwata dropped more information about the upcoming Animal Crossing themed DLC for Mario Kart 8. DLC Pack Two will come with three new racers, four new vehicles, and eight more courses for two new cups. The three new characters included are Isabelle, Villager, and Dry Bowser. Another welcomed addition to Mario Kart 8 is the inclusion of a “200cc” mode for those who need more speed and are furious when the race isn’t fast enough.
As of today, Wii U owners can now play Nintendo 64 and DS games. Hopefully we see a slew of games in the coming months added to the catalog, but for now we have Yoshi’s Island DS and Super Mario 64. You can pick up N64 games for $9.99-$11.99 and DS games for $6.99-$9.99.
Nintendo will also play host to a bunch of indie games in the coming months. The likes of Octodad and Don’t Starve will be making an appearance on the Virtual Console in the coming months. Twenty four other indies were also confirmed during the presentation.
Nintendo appears to be modernizing their approach to software distribution. Many of the games that were touched on will maintain the status of “download only” as opposed to physical copies.
If there’s one thing to come away with after this Nintendo Direct, it’s that Nintendo is taking steps in the right direction as an entertainment provider. It seems as if they’ve given up on old ways and are moving in a progressive direction. Remember, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.
