LEGO’s collaboration efforts with Nintendo continue to build an impressive retro experience. After many announcements earlier this year in March about LEGO’s newest venture, this morning; Nintendo posted a Youtube video featuring a LEGO model in the shape of a Nintendo Entertainment System. This 2600 piece set features a model of the classic NES complete with: a NES controller, a black box Super Mario Bros cartridge, and even an 80s themed mini TV, floppy antenna, and all! Set to release on August 1st, this brick-sized console has much more in store than just vintage vanity.
The amount of detail put into this faithful recreation is stunning as the NES system and TV have the correct audio-video ports and stylish buttons and knobs. The classical design, however, is only for appearance as the TV features a fully playable Super Mario level with a crank to move Mario along the screen. Interestingly, the pieces that create the screen on the TV track are like the graph paper sketches the original Super Mario Bros team drafted to make the iconic levels recognized in this set. In the video demonstration, the set is compatible with the Bluetooth Super Mario figure LEGO showcased earlier this year. Playing the instantly recognizable tunes and sound clips complete the authentic recreation, even if it’s powered by LEGO bricks.
The playset will be released alongside other interactive toys featuring Super Mario. It also marks the first regular LEGO set to use Bluetooth technology outside of the LEGO Technic and Powered Up brands. It’s a whole new and novel way to play with LEGO bricks alongside Nintendo’s iconic mustached mascot. With this year marking Mario’s 35th anniversary, there’s no better way to celebrate a nostalgic blast from the past. Retailing at $229.99, it’s a must-have for any retro gaming fanatic and any gaming history enthusiast.
