Nintendo Switch is in a golden age these days. Last counted a couple of months ago in November 2019, the worldwide Switch Hardware units sold was 44.59 million. That’s not counting more holiday shopping in December. These numbers also include the new, less hybrid version of the Switch Lite. It’s a far cry from how Nintendo is doing in comparison to the Wii U era.Â
Nintendo Switch, Lite & Pro?
This begs the question, is now the time to release another new more powerful console? If the report made by Digitimes is accurate, then according to Nintendo, yes. Slated for mid-2020 release date. Nintendo is reportedly releasing what many believe to be a Switch Pro. Though for the record the report doesn’t outright say that’s the product. It would make sense though given Nintendo’s Switch release pattern.
They’ve seen great success with Nintendo Switch, a hybrid dockable on the go console. Instead of stopping there, however, they added another console, the Switch Lite. I was blown away by how many people I knew leading up to the release of the Switch Lite almost or never docked their normal Switch. Nintendo kept a pulse on its own market and knew what the people wanted before they were asking. A cheaper price tag, fun colors and simply a giant Nintendo DS.
Is More Powerful Better?
The Switch is no powerhouse. It will never contend with the likes of Xbox or PlayStation. This isn’t an issue though, they have their market and they’re killing it. So why now? Why a more powerful console, Switch or otherwise? Third-party releases. Despite the lack of power, Nintendo has been releasing third party games that may not look as good, but still work on the portable device. Imagine pulling that off but with the addition of 4K? Bluetooth capable, longer battery life? There are a number of improvements that fans would welcome without having to break the bank. This would fuel the third party support of Switch, while still giving Nintendo their niche market.
Looks like time will tell if the report is true and what exactly we’ll be getting. One thing is clear, 2020 will be an expensive year for gamers.
