The New York Videogame Critics Circle (NYVGCC) together with The DreamYard Project have announced BX Start, a summer journalism course for underserved high school students in The Bronx.
The Critics Circle’s journalism mentors will use BX Start to teach students the skills necessary to pursue a career in the games industry.
The course will be taught by Imad Khan, an NYVGCC member with by-lines on ESPN and The Washington Post, and Stefanelli Romano, a professor from Bronx High School of Business.
“We have 25 eager students from three schools with us – and they’re going to learn so much”,
NYVGCC president Harold Goldberg said in a blog post on July 9th.
“We’re all going to work hard to make this program a great success, one that can be scaled to work in other schools throughout the city as well.”
Goldberg added the BX Start course would start this summer for six weeks with 25 students coming from three schools in the Bronx area. All classes will be taught in an “artful” temporary space, while works for a larger Bronx game center are finished.
“This is a giant step forward in what has been a first-of-its-kind partnership for our non-profit organization,”
Goldberg explained in a press release, commenting on the news.
“Investing time and energy into these students, who will be the gaming journalists and narrative designers of the future, is highly rewarding; we can’t wait to see the students thrive in, and outside of the classroom.”
The New York Videogame Critics Circle was established in 2012 as a not-for-profit organization, and it is composed of videogame critics, designers, writers, reporters, bloggers and videographers in New York City.
