When the Star Wars anthology films were announced back in 2015, fans began to speculate on what spin-off movies they would like to see. On the top of most fans wish list was an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film that takes place in between the prequel and original trilogies. (To prove the popularity of the concept, below is a fan-made Kenobi trailer from Smasher that has over 14 million views).
For three years we have been asking for this movie and now it appears we may be getting the Kenobi solo film as early as December 2020. According to a report by Fantha Tracks, an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in pre-production and is set to start filming in 2019.
The siteās āwell-placed sourceā has seen documents that confirm:
āPre-production will continue at Pinewood whilst Episode IX shoots from this summer through the end of the year, at which point production of the Obi-Wan movie has been scheduled to move onto stages in mid-January 2019 with the main shoot to begin in April of 2019.ā
Brian Cameron (author of this report) did go on to write that the scheduled release date for the project is December 2020 and the documents did not disclose any details on the cast.
Ewan McGregor, who played Kenobi in all three of the prequel films, has voiced his desire to reprise his role as Obi-Wan. At the Golden Globes back in January, McGregor told reporters:
“Thereās a lot of talk, and Iād be happy to play him again, but I donāt know anything more than you do”
Liam Neeson, who played Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace, has also expressed interest in returning to this universe. Both McGregor and Neeson have said that Disney nor Lucasfilm has reached out for any upcoming projects.
What do you think about this report? Would you be interested in a Kenobi spin-off set after the events of Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith with McGregor back in the role? Let us know in the comments and be sure to follow us here at The Nerd Stash for all of your nerdy news and needs!
