Odd Taxi and the Rise to a Loving Audience
Odd Taxi first premiered in Japan on April 5 and aired for a run of 13 episodes. Crunchyroll was mainly behind the streaming of the anime in the West. The story follows Otokawa, a 41-year old taxi driver that has conversations with his customers. These conversations range from college students that want to go viral, a nurse hiding a big secret, an unsuccessful comedian, and an up-and-coming idol. These conversations then lead Otokawa to the case of a girl who has disappeared.
Many consider the show to be a strong social commentary, along with the other anthropomorphic series Beaststars. Where Odd Taxi distinguishes itself is with its unconventional visual aesthetics, black humor, and unconventional approach to its narrative and characters. Fans and critics alike fell in love with the story from the second the first season ended. The initial ending gave those the speculation that there wouldn’t be any continuation of the story.
Manga creator Kadzuya Konomoto originally wrote the story. Takechi Abaraya and Konomoto first learned the manga on January 15 on Shogakukan’s digital manga service two years earlier. Many considered the end of Odd Taxi to be a twist that not many saw coming. The series was also listed in many “best of 2021” anime lists with the New Yorker giving it an honorable mention for “best television show”.
