After a long wait and also after much controversy, the official trailer for The Flash was released today during the Super Bowl. While there is certainly some reasonable awkwardness surrounding this trailer, there is still plenty of material in the trailer for The Flash that should get DC and superhero movie fans pretty excited. For one thing, the trailer is teasing some amazing special effects and action sequences. We’re also getting a glimpse of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) learning the hard way that fiddling around with past events, even if it is to save his mother, can result in dangerous consequences. We also get our first look at Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl.
But perhaps the most exciting part of The Flash trailer is seeing some familiar faces return. Michael Shannon is back as the villain General Zod, a role we’ve only seen him play once, albeit brilliantly, in 2013’s Man of Steel. But even more exciting is the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, an iconic role that he hasn’t reprised since 1992’s Batman Returns. Even with all the controversy surrounding The Flash, this trailer has plenty of material to get fans excited to see it.
Is ‘The Flash’ Super Bowl Trailer Enough to Get Fans to Forget the Controversy?
While the trailer has plenty of material for The Flash to get DC fans hyped up, the elephant in the room cannot be ignored. There is some controversy surrounding this movie due to numerous legal issues and disturbing allegations surrounding actor Ezra Miller who plays the title character. Last year, Miller was arrested in Hawaii for disorderly conduct in a karaoke bar. From there, Miller’s issues only worsened, with further allegations of violence coming to the forefront. Miller has also been accused of grooming a minor and starting a cult. Miller also faced burglary charges for stealing liquor in Vermont, a charge the actor initially pleaded not guilty to. According to the New York Post, Miller pleaded guilty to a lesser charge last month. With all of Miller’s legal issues, many fans wanted the actor removed from the film entirely. Seeing this trailer today during the Super Bowl may not have been so exciting for those fans.
While Miller is now a polarizing figure whose career could very well be ruined, the actor has apparently been seeking help in dealing with mental health issues that may be contributing to this behavior. Director and author Stephen Chbosky, who wrote the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower and directed the adaptation Miller starred in, recently said of Miller, “I hope Ezra finds the light that they shined so brightly back when we shot the movie because the kid I met was a remarkably magical person. And I always like to believe that that person is always in there, and I hope that they can find the help that they need.”
The Flash will release in theaters on June 16.
