The original cast of The Boondock Saints movies will once again combine forces with director Troy Duffy for The Boondock Saints III. That’s right, Norman Reedus will reprise his role as Murphy MacManus and Sean Patrick Flanery as Conor MacManus. The Boondock Saints (1999) revolves around two rough and tumble fraternal brothers, Connor (Flannery) and Murphy (Reedus) MacManus, who kill various Boston criminals in the name of God. Although it didn’t do well at the box office it gathered a cult following. In the second film The Boondock 2: All Saints Day (2009), the MacManus brothers seek revenge for the murder of a cherished priest. It further fueled the strong cult following of the franchise. As such, the original cast and director of The Boondock Saints are back for the third installment.
Troy Duffy wrote and directed the first two movies. Duffy will produce the new film along with Don Carmody (Good Will Hunting), and Impossible Dream Entertainment partners Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick. He has big plans for the direction of Reedus’ and Flanery’s roles as the MacManus Brothers. Duffy wants to make the MacManus brothers’ story into a John Wick-type of a worldwide franchise.
Troy Duffy remarked on the strong fan support of the film series saying:
They use terms of endearment like ‘the Brothers’ or ‘the Boys.’ We left them in jail at the end of Boondock 2 and fans want to know what happened to them. Norman and Sean have been a driving force to keep this franchise on track and break some new ground story-wise. The fans have been waiting. They literally ask about it daily, and I am really excited to be working with Impossible Dream to make Boondock III a reality.”
Reedus and Flanery Return as MacManus brothers with a Bang for The Boondock Saints III.
Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus have made names for themselves outside of the MacManus brothers. Flanery has had notable roles in Powder, The Dead Zone, and Saw: The Final Chapter. Reedus has starred as Daryl Dixon for 10 seasons on the hit AMC series The Walking Dead. Reedus was nominated for Saturn Awards and People’s Choice Awards for his portrayal of Dixon. He will be in the upcoming The Walking Dead spin-off series with Melissa McBride (who plays Carol Peletier), premiering in 2023.
Fans thought that The Boondocks III was no longer happening. In 2017, Flanery tweeted that he and Reedus were no longer involved in The Boondock III because of disagreements. Troy Duffy says the disagreements have been resolved. Flanery has been proactive in the completion of the current draft. There are big plans for the MacManus brothers.
There is no official release date for The Boondocks III yet.
