13 years after Orphan garnered a cult following in the horror community, Isabelle Fuhrman reprised her role as Esther in Orphan: First Kill. Now 25 years old, growing up as a murderous character had made her feel “nicer,” as she revealed in an interview with Variety.
Orphan followed a husband, Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga, who adopted a girl, Isabelle Fuhrman. While she seemed like a young, innocent girl, she soon displayed violent tendencies and a sinister side to her personality. She also knew about adult subjects like sex and an adult level of knowledge of culture. It turned out that she was no young girl but an adult with a rare form of dwarfism.
“This is going to sound funny, but I think it made me a nicer, friendlier person. When you’re greeted by strangers and their immediate reaction is fear, you really have to overcompensate.”

Although the film never launched into a huge horror classic, it found its audience through the DVD release. While people would recognize her, not many could quite place the setting. It could be through school or from Orphan. Isabelle Fuhrman said this worked out as she could live her life without becoming some shining star in Hollywood.
“I was really fortunate that even though it became this cult classic after it came out on DVD, I was able to have a childhood,” she said about the Orphan DVD release.
The 2009 original was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise). It was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) and Alex Mace (The Expecting). Next to the three leads, Orphan starred CCH Pounder (Avatar) and Margo Martindale (American Crime Story).
Orphan: First Kill looks at what happened before Esther was adopted in the first film. It was directed by William Brent Bell (The Boy), with David Coggeshall (Scream: The TV Series) penning the script. The Paramount prequel stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Julia Stiles (Dexter), Rossif Sutherland (Possessor), and Hiro Kanagawa (iZombie).
