Become Big Brother in the Indie Simulation Game Orwell

Big Brother has arrived, and it’s you! Created by Osmotic Studios – with the trailer posted on GOG.com’s youtube earlier today – Orwell takes inspiration from the subject matter of dystopian fiction classic 1984 and is named after the book’s author, George Orwell. The indie game puts players in the shoes of a citizen tasked with invading other people’s internet information as a way of finding those responsible for a set of terrorist attacks.

The trailer displays the gameplay to be reminiscent of Lucas Pope’s puzzle game of the same dystopian ilk, Papers Please. Gameplay seems to rely on simple walls of text and information as opposed to cinematics and other notable video game elements.

Users will act as a curator, sifting through specific individuals information – dedicated to a specific case – choosing which information to divulge to “Big Brother.” As a result, it’s entirely possible to incriminate the wrong person, purposely or not.

Sale of dystopian books like 1984 has managed to sell more copies now than when they were released around 40 years ago. It makes sense that game developers would create a game inspired by the world current political climate going on in the US, UK, and other countries in regards to internet privacy – as well as infringements upon other rights – laws.

Orwell’s demo has actually been available on Steam since late 2016 and currently, sits at Very Positive among critics and viewers alike. The full game is currently on sale for $7.49, 25 percent of the original $9.99, likely coinciding with the game’s first official trailer.
