Paid XP boosts have been added to Marvel’s Avengers, much to the dismay of the player base. Square Enix has previously said that “content purchasable with real money will be aesthetic-only”. Clearly, that’s not the case anymore.
This update has arrived in the game after Marvel’s Avengers was added to Xbox Game Pass last week, and has seen a large influx of players as a result, so it seems Square Enix is trying to capitalize on this opportunity.
These consumable XP boosts are essentially an accelerator, boosting XP and resource gains to ensure faster progress, and fans are far from happy with this, who believe both the developer and publisher have gone back on promises they made regarding microtransactions.
The backlash from fans is clear to see, with the Marvel’s Avengers subreddit filled with posts criticizing the decision that has been made, and even citing a clear example of where promises were made to avoid pay-to-win additions to the game.
One clear example of this is during a presentation for the game at E3 2019, senior community manager Meagan Marie stated: “Our promise to the community is that we won’t have random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios.” The statement was met with loud cheers from the audience.
Some however weren’t as surprised as others, as Crystal Dynamics slowed down level up rates in a previous update, explained in their blog post as the old XP rate led to “pacing issues”. One Redditor said ” I knew it was coming since the second they announced the existence of these boosters after they unnecessarily nerfed the XP curve, and yet, this still hit harder than I thought it would”.
