Time to break out the confetti, it is time to celebrate. The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, revealed that Paper Mario: The Origami King is the fastest-selling game in the series.
Not only did the new Paper Mario set a new launch month sales record, but it also was the third best selling game for July of this year. The previous fastest-selling Paper Mario game was Super Paper Mario, followed by Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Another aspect to note is that the NPD Group only tracks physical sales. There are even more units sold given how big downloading games from the eShop has been.
Paper Mario: The Origami King follows Mario and friends as they take on an origami prince destined to turn the world into origami. It also changes the battle system to be more puzzle-oriented with the spinning battlefield mechanic.
Paper Mario as a franchise has had its ups and downs over the years. While the original games are the best of Nintendo, the recent sequels like Paper Mario: Color Splash came and went without any fanfare.
Even with the less stellar games, Paper Mario: The Origami King has been a hit for most players. The combination of the new battle system with the classic Paper Mario writing definitely makes it worth checking out.
Paper Mario: The Origami King Continues Nintendo Hits Record on Switch
When it comes to Nintendo franchises, for the most part, their Switch iterations have been the best in history. For example, Animal Crossing: New Horizons broke record after record even in its first month of sales.
Other notable releases record for July was for Ghost of Tsushima, which was the best-selling game of July 2020 and the 5th best-selling game of 2020 year-to-date.
