Snoopy has a new home! Apple signed a deal that gave them the rights to stream Peanuts television specials on Apple TV. The three specials: A Charlie Brown Christmas, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will be free-to-watch on the streaming service on certain holiday dates.
Free-To-Watch Specials
Apple released the classic Peanuts movie It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on October 19, just in time for the Halloween season. For non-subscribers, the special will be free-to-watch from October 30 – November 1. Likewise, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will be released on November 18 and then will be free for everyone from November 25 – 27. A Charlie Brown Christmas debuts December 4 and will become free-to-watch from December 11 – 13.
Since the 1960s, these holiday specials were broadcasted on free-to-air television. According to Vulture, this new deal might mean that Peanuts specials will no longer be shown on traditional channels. They have noted that the Apple press release had no mention of “exclusivity” so there is no clear answer in regards to that yet. This deal could mark the first time the Peanuts specials will be aired on non-traditional channels since 1965.
More Peanuts on Apple TV
Also, Apple revealed that the new animated Peanuts shows will also be coming to Apple TV. This includes a second season of Snoopy in Space and the debut of The Snoopy Show in 2021. Apple has partnered up with WildBrain, Peanuts Worldwide, and Lee Mendelson Film Productions to create specials for Mother’s Day, Earth Day, and New Year’s Eve.
Peanuts was originally a daily comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz in 1950. The syndicated series is one of the most popular and influential in comics history. With the specials moving to a streaming service, Peanuts will now be introduced to a whole new generation, perpetuating its influence and success.
